January Training Webinars and other Online Events

January 6, 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. ET: The Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Compliant Investigation Process and Corrective Action Plan Procedure

This is a free webinar offered through a collaboration of the U.S. Access Board, the Great Lakes ADA Center, and the ADA National Network.

From the Great Lakes ADA Center: Have you encountered an inaccessible entrance or other barrier to access when visiting a local post office, federal office building, or national park? These and many other federal facilities are covered under the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) of 1968, the first federal law to require facilities to be accessible to people with disabilities. The Access Board was created almost 50 years ago to enforce the ABA through the investigation of complaints. This webinar will feature the Access Board’s Senior Compliance Specialist who will discuss the ABA complaint investigation process and corrective action plan procedure to address the barriers. Session attendees will also learn about the most common barriers to accessibility in complaints received under the ABA. This webinar will include video remote interpreting (VRI) and real-time captioning. Questions can be submitted in advance of the session or can be posed during the live webinar. Webinar attendees can earn continuing education credits.

Free but registration is required. To Register:  https://www.accessibilityonline.org/ao/session/?id=110981

January 20, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. ET Free Webinar: Free Webinar: Promoting Development and Accessibility of Health Apps for People with Disabilities

This is a free webinar offered through the Great Lakes ADA Center on behalf of the ADA National Network.

From the Great Lakes ADA Center: Mobile healthcare, or mHealth, is an important new tool for self-management of chronic conditions. However, growth in development of mHealth “apps” may increase health disparities by leaving behind vulnerable populations, including people with disabilities. The App Factory aims to ensure that people with disabilities are full participants in the growth of mHealth. We are addressing this aim in two ways. First, we want to help people find apps that are both effective in managing health and also accessible and usable by people with disabilities. Our website provides results from our accessibility testing and review of popular mHealth apps and encourages readers to evaluate and share their feedback about the usability of mHealth apps … and get paid for their feedback! Second, we provide funding support to app developers interested in making assistive or accessible mHealth apps that meet the needs of people with disabilities. We conduct an annual competition and fund 3-5 new app development projects each year. We also solicit feedback from people with disabilities to determine the high-priority needs for new app development.

January 25, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. ET Free Webinar: The Wonderful World of Audio Description in 2022

This is a free webinar offered through the Great Lakes ADA Center on behalf of the federal partners.

From the Great Lakes ADA Center: Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires federal agencies to make their information and communication technology (ICT) accessible to people with disabilities. Planning for accessibility needs to be a part of the development and lifecycle plan of any ICT project, including video and multimedia projects. These types of projects can be accessible by providing audio description, or sometimes referred to as video description, which is used by persons who are blind or have low vision. Presenters will review different types of accessible media, the basics of audio description, considerations in planning procurement and development of accessible video and multimedia, and best practices in providing audio description into media. Presenters will also address agency successes, challenges, and limitations in the contracting process and implementation of audio description. Questions can be submitted in advance of the session or can be posed during the live webinar. Webinar attendees can receive a participation certificate.
